How can we teach Fractional Measurement?
Bearing in mind the obstacles encountered when teaching fractional
measurement will help you teach the concept. Try to avoid these
traps:
- Avoid abstract concepts. Use concrete ideas.Use common objects
such as arms or chalk brushes.
- Avoid "techie" terms. Keep the language simple. Try not to use
common units until the kids are comfortable with the concept and
understand it.
- Avoid non-linear examples such as the "Pie method" or using
coins, which can be confusing. I have noticed that kids will
sometimes have a problem moving from a non linear to a linear
concept.
